Ted Cruz Surprises Sandy Hook Victim's Daughter With Telephone Call

The daughter of the Sandy Hook Elementary School principal who died in the mass killing in December could not join others from her community this week to lobby for gun control.

So she turned to Twitter to reach out to the 15 senators who indicated they would engage in a filibuster to block legislation on gun control. She said she just wanted them to vote, not put roadblocks in the way of debate and voting.

Only one of the senators called Erica Lafferty after her tweet – Ted Cruz.

Lafferty told The New York Times that Cruz, a Texas Republican, called her on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

He first offered condolences for her loss, calling the shooting “an unspeakable tragedy,” the paper said.

“I think, at the end, we agreed to disagree,” Lafferty is quoted as saying in the Times. “I think I stumped him a bit. I made my point that the purpose of being in Congress is to debate and to vote. And that is what his state elected him to do. Not to hide behind a filibuster. That is not doing his job.”

Lafferty's tweets to the senators’ Twitter accounts included photos of her mother, Dawn Hochsprung, with despairing messages.

She also tweeted: Going through the list of senators threatening to filibuster – calling them one by one. I WILL BE HEARD.

She said she and the senator agreed to disagree on gun control.

During the roughly 20-minute conversation, Cruz said that he preferred more prosecution of criminals and better rules concerning involuntary commitment for people who are mentally ill.

A Cruz spokeswoman told reporters: “He is glad they had the chance to speak and it was a respectful conversation.”
