What Lawmakers Want To Hear From The President During State Of The Union

As President Obama prepares to give his State of the Union Address Tuesday night, what does his audience want to hear?

Here's a sampling of what some lawmakers would like the president to address.

I look forward with great hope that Congress and all Americans will listen to President Obama give another speech in the spirit of his address in Tucson."

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md.

"In his State of the Union Address tonight, I hope the President creates an atmosphere where the Republicans and Democrats are not symbolically sitting together, but in which we all recognize that there is an economic crisis we face as a nation and that we must work closely together in support of sound economic policies.

Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y.

The voters sent a clear message in November that when it comes to jobs and the economy, the administration's policies have done far more damage than good. and one very positive thing that the president could do tonight is to acknowledge that they have a point.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

"I expect him to talk about jobs and growing the economy. They are the issue that the American public is most focused on and rightfully so."

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

"The American people know that we can't continue to borrow and spend our way to prosperity. They understand that we've got to tighten the belt. And I'm hopeful that the President has listened to the American people. I'm hopeful that the word ‘investment' really isn't more ‘stimulus' spending and a bigger government here in Washington. "So, I'm looking forward to listening to what the President has to say tonight."
