House leaders reacted to the Bureau of Labor Statistics July Jobs Report in a familiar fashion on Friday: they blamed the other side for the economy's troubles. The only major difference was timing.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., went the "oldie but goodie" route. "Today's report shows that our teachers, police officers, firefighters, and nurses are still feeling the worst of the Bush recession," she said in a statement. Noting that the economy added 71,000 private sector jobs in July, the seventh consecutive month of such growth, Pelosi said the Democrats' agenda is working, "despite Congressional Republicans fighting against the economic recovery every step of the way." Pelosi insisted that the Congress would "not (go) back to the same failed Bush policies that cost us millions of jobs."
In his statement on the jobs report, House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, fired away at the current president. "It's time for President Obama to listen to the American people and face up to the fact that his ‘stimulus' policies aren't working," Boehner said.
He also blasted House Democrats for calling members back to Washington on Tuesday to vote on a so-called "state aid" bill.
Democrats say the $26.1 billion measure would provide states with the funds to pay teachers' salaries and make Medicaid payments through 2011. Republicans charge that the bill is nothing more than a special interest payoff to public employees unions.
Though they can't seem to agree on when things went wrong, it appears that Democrats and Republicans can reach a bipartisan consensus on one thing: it's the other guy's fault.
