The Senate swears in its newest member Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. ET. Soon-to-be Sen. Carte Goodwin, D-W. Va., won’t have long to bask in the glow though. Shortly after the ceremony ends, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., plans on bringing a bill to extend unemployment benefits through November to the floor. He expects Goodwin to provide the 60th vote for cloture to end debate. After the vote we expect the Reid to speak about the measure at the weekly policy luncheon stakeout, followed by a rebuttal from Senate Republicans at the same lectern.
Gen. James Clapper, President Obama’s nominee to become the new Director of National Intelligence (DNI) has his confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee at 2:30 p.m. ET. Clapper is likely to face tough questions on the role of the DNI, a position that some critics claim has an uncertain role in the nation’s intelligence infrastructure.
At 10:00 a.m. ET Solicitor General Elena Kagan could get one step closer to becoming the newest Associate Justice on the Supreme Court. The Senate Judiciary Committee will decide whether to send Obama’s second Court nominee to the full Senate for a final confirmation vote. Jim Manley, senior spokesman for Reid, says that the leader plans to schedule floor debate on Kagan for the first week of August so that if approved, she can have time to prepare for the beginning of the Court’s term in October.
Senate leadership welcomes British Prime Minister David Cameron to the Capitol in the afternoon. Cameron visits the legislature after meeting with the president earlier in the day.
