Tuesday’s Capitol Hill action has one common theme: money.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., will address the need to solve America’s fiscal crisis at a 9:00 a.m. ET event at Washington, DC’s Union Station. Hoyer is expected to say that defense spending must be part of any discussion on deficit reduction. Previous Democratic plans for spending cuts excluded reductions in defense spending.
At 9:30 a.m. ET, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hears testimony on Iranian sanctions legislation from William Burns from the State Department and Stewart Levey of the Treasury Department. The two men serve as the Obama administration’s point people for the sanctions legislation and will testify about the economic and political impact new these actions will have on the rogue regime.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner talks TARP at 10:00a.m. ET before the Congressional Oversight Panel, which was created by the bank bailout program to oversee its operation.
Three Democratic Senators hold a press conference to discuss the “extenders” bill that is currently stalled in the upper chamber of Congress. They’ll be talking about the need to pass the bill in order to restore Medicare reimbursement payments to the states, which are facing their own budget crises.
The House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs will present the findings of a six-month investigation of the Defense Department’s Host Nation Trucking and private security contracts for the conflict in Afghanistan at 2:30p.m. ET. The trucking program has been criticized as wasteful, and some private security firms in the war-torn region have been accused of working with the Taliban to stage attacks in order to maximize profits.
There’s plenty more action ahead today, so stay with Fox News for all the latest.
