As the head of British government was rapidly changing across the ocean, President Obama took time Tuesday afternoon to make phone calls to the outgoing and the incoming British Prime Ministers.
The White House released a statement saying President Obama invited the new Prime Minister, David Cameron, and his wife to visit Washington this summer. According to the statement, during their phone call, President Obama reiterated the close ties between the United States and Great Britain. "I reiterated my deep and personal commitment to the special relationship between our two countries – a bond that has endured for generations and across party lines, and that is essential to the security and prosperity of our two countries, and the world." Prime Minister Cameron's office says the two men discussed Afghanistan, the Middle East peace process and Iran.
The first opportunity for the two leaders to meet one another will be in June when Canada hosts the G8 & G20 summits in Toronto.
Mr. Obama also called former Prime Minister Gordon Brown this afternoon at 5:30pm.
