What could the White House possibly have meant when it said that on Election Night, President Obama wasn't watching the returns? No matter how you interpret that it doesn't look good.

Did the president not care? Was he so confident of victory -- or defeat? Did he consider the voice of the people -- and the outcome -- irrelevant?

CNN reported that the president's top adviser, David Axelrod, said that Mr. Obama was "more likely to watch Tuesday night's Chicago Bulls game than any political coverage."

Have we gone from the audacity of hope to the audacity of hoops?
