He is a theatrical trailblazer for Latinos, growing up in East Los Angeles and arriving on Broadway in the Big Apple in the 1960s as a young Chicano actor. Decades later, Dan Guerrero has created a legacy and is definitely an “Orgullo Latino.”

Throughout his career, Guerrero took time off from the stage and served as an agent for a young Sarah Jessica Parker and Fran Drescher, but later returned to his roots and began performing once again.

He now stars in “Gaytino,” an autobiographical comedy that discusses the complexities of growing up gay and Latino. The show continues to tour the country. It’s full of laughs, but it also serves as a bridge by helping audiences of all backgrounds understand the challenges Guerrero has faced having to navigate in different realities as a Latino entertainer.

"Latinos face the same issues, even though it's better, today, that we faced 20 years ago,” says Guerrero. “We still have so few positive images. It's still so difficult to get Latino programming on television or get a movie made."

As a pioneer for all Latinos, MY Lifestyle Extra salutes Dan Guerrero for his legacy! To check out more of the show “Gaytino,” go to gaytino.com.

This week, MY Lifestyle Extra wraps up the “Best of 2012” series with a countdown of the three Latino celebrity stories that made headlines this past year. We begin with one of the hottest celebrity pregnancy stories. Singer Shakira and her soccer player boyfriend, Gerard Pique, announced they are expecting a child. She originally kept the pregnancy secret, but after rumors intensified, the Colombian superstar revealed it to her fans on YouTube. The pair is expecting a boy. Felicidades to them both!

Another celebrity in the headlines was Singer Marc Anthony, whose charity organization Maestro Cares recently raised $200,000 to expand the Children of Christ orphanage in the Dominican Republic. He also scored big this past year by appearing on the X Factor with Simon Cowell, mentoring contestants on the top-rated hit show. It was definitely a good year for this top Puerto Rican singer!

Finally, the top celebrity newsmaker of this year goes to Singer Thalia. Her current album “Habitame Siempre” has been certified gold and platinum in her native Mexico. She made an appearance on the Today Show alongside legendary singer Tony Bennett and although her mother passed away in May, she still managed to reach out to her fans and help those in need. Working with the Mexican Consulate in New York City, Thalia passed out clothing, sleeping bags and other essential supplies to victims of Hurricane Sandy. What a great example for all Latinos. Congratulations to Thalia!
