Gingerbread lovers rejoice!
The winners of the 21st Annual National Gingerbread House Competition have been announced and you won’t believe your eyes when you see what these talented chefs and amateur pastry makers have created. Best of all, every last detail is completely edible. The largest gingerbread- structure competition at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina, Nov. 17 and 18, but displays of the creations are still on exhibit for viewing until Jan. 2.
These culinary creations go way beyond the traditional brick-and-frosting-mortar houses seen at other festivals.
The fantastical gingerbread displays take food artistry to the next level. From animals to cars, outdoor scenes and more, the ideas were endless. Over 150 houses and sculptures were submitted this year.
An elite panel of judges took in overall appearance, originality and creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme when evaluating the scores. According to the rules of this competition, each house had to be constructed from entirely edible materials – no plastic fillers here – and the whole design had to be at least 75 percent gingerbread.
