Casual hookups may not be that much fun for women.
According to a new study by Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction, women are much less likely to experience an orgasm during casual sex than when having sex within a committed relationship, UPI reported.
Justin Garcia, an assistant research scientist at the Kinsey Institute, interviewed 600 female college students about their sex lives and found that women were half as likely to reach sexual climax during casual hookups, compared to when they were in serious relationships.
"We've been sold this bill of goods that we're in an era where people can be sexually free and participate equally in the hookup culture," Garcia told The New York Times. "The fact is that not everyone's having a good time.”
In a separate study, New York University sociologist Paula England analyzed the sex lives of 24,000 college students at 21 universities over a five-year period. She found that only 40 percent of women claimed to have had an orgasm during their latest casual sexual encounter, as opposed to 80 percent of men. Additionally, 75 percent of women surveyed said they had an orgasm the last time they had sex while in a committed relationship.
"Women are not feeling very free in these casual contexts to say what they want and need," England told the Times.
