School officials in California closed 11 Orange County schools to test the properties for cancer-causing asbestos, MyFoxLA.com reported.

Members of the Ocean View School District school board raised concerns about whether students were exposed to carcinogenic dust during construction projects earlier this school year.

The school board initially chose to close only two schools in the area but determined during a school board meeting Tuesday that all schools in the district would close as a precaution, MyFoxLA.com reported.

School officials are investigating whether contractors violated protocol by removing asbestos on or after the first day of school.
