A San Antonio teenager who suffered a life-threatening brain injury has made a remarkable recovery.
Alexandra Garcia, 17, wasn’t wearing a helmet this past June when the ATV she was riding in struck a tree and she crash-landed on her head, according to reports by local ABC and NBC affiliates.
Garcia was in a coma for eight days and her parents feared she would never wake up. Doctors told the family she likely would not survive.
“They didn't even think she'd come out of it," Alex Garcia, the teen’s father, told the local ABC affiliate.
When she woke up, she was initially paralyzed.
But now Garcia is not only attending school, she’s playing volleyball – leaving her doctors to wonder how someone with severe head trauma could be back to normal in a matter of months.
But her father said the answer is clear.
"If there's any doubt in anyone's mind that God exists, he exists. This is an angel walking right here," her father said. "She is an inspiration to everyone. She's walking and she's happy and she's smiling, and I thank God every day for it."
Alexandra is still undergoing therapy and doesn't remember the crash.
"I thank God every day, everybody, every day, just to be back to myself," Alexandra told the local NBC affiliate.
