Most people suffer with some sort of embarrassing skin problem at some point in their lifetime. But not all skin issues are easy to identify.

We recently got this question from a viewer:

Dear Dr. Manny,
I've noticed what I think are skin tags popping up around my face and neck. What can I do to get rid of them? Is it safe to just cut them off myself?
Thanks,
Kevin

Skin tags affect almost half of the population. It’s a small flap of benign tissue that hangs off the surface of the skin in places like the face, neck, chest, back, armpits and groin area.

Trying to cut them off yourself could lead to an infection, so you should see a dermatologist to make sure that they are in fact skin tags and not something more serious.

There are several treatments available to treat skin tags like:

  • Removal with a scalpel or medical scissors
  • Freezing or burning them off
  • Laser surgery
  • Cutting off the blood supply
  • Using topical medications

Some herbal remedies like tea-tree oil have produced good results, but you should consult with a doctor before trying them – especially in sensitive areas, like your eyes.
