The good news is Latino teens are more likely to use birth control effectively. The bad news? Latinos are about 1.5 times more likely to have multiple children before they turn 20.
As promising statistics continue to show that the birth rate among teens is going down, new data regarding repeat teen births demonstrates that teen pregnancy is still very much an issue in the community.
While this number has decreased slightly over years, according to the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention nearly 1 in 5 births to Latino teens ages 15 to 19 is not their first.
On the bright side, Latino teen mothers are using the most effective types of birth control and at the highest percentage of any demographic.
At 28 percent, Latinos trump both Whites and African-American teen mothers when it comes to preventing future pregnancies.
While the negative health, economic and social consequences of teen pregnancy are not anything new, the CDC stressed in its report the further constrains that multiple births can place on the mother's education and employment possibilities.
Earlier this year, data from the center showed Latino high school students are getting smarter when it comes to sexual intercourse.
Data compiled from 2007 to 2011 shows the amount of sexually active high school Latinos decreased by 3.9 percent.
