Former Baltimore Orioles exec-turned-radio broadcaster Jim Duquette donated a kidney to his dying daughter this summer, CBS Baltimore reported.
Duquette’s 10-year-old daughter, Lindsay, needed a transplant after suffering through eight years of kidney failure. She tried several medications, but a year-and-a-half ago, doctors were forced to remove both of her kidneys. She started dialysis, and the search was on for a new kidney, the TV station reported.
“When you start to get the experimental drugs, you’re at the end of the line, really,” Duquette said.
Duquette had his blood tested, and he was a match. It took three months of preparation before the surgery could be performed.
Dr. Paul Colombani, children’s surgeon-in-charge at Johns Hopkins Hospital, said when a kidney is removed, it has to be cooled and flushed.
“There are tens of thousands of patients on the waiting list, nationally,” Colombani said – adding there aren’t enough donors to meet the need.
CBS Baltimore said the father and daughter have recovered from the surgery and are now well enough to play ball together.
