Boston Mayor Tom Menino has been hospitalized with a virus after a trip to Italy.

The mayor's office confirmed to FOX 25 that Menino fell ill at the end of last week. They said he saw a doctor for what he thought was the flu, but was hospitalized at Brigham and Women's Hospital for another virus.

The mayor recently returned from a trip to Italy. The mayor's office spokesperson said he was also being treated for a blood clot he got from the flight.

Menino is reportedly working from his hospital bed. He is expected to be released early this week.

The city says all public schools will be closed Monday and all nonessential city employees have been told to stay home. Massachusetts officials have opened the state emergency operations center to prepare for the storm.
