A rising trend among young girls, where they post videos of themselves on Youtube asking others if they are pretty, has some experts and parents concerned, MyFoxTampaBay.com reported.
The videos are getting millions of hits, according to the TV station. The girls voice their insecurities before ending with the question, “Am I pretty?”
"All my friends at school are always like, 'Oh you're so pretty, but I don't have a boyfriend, and boys don't like me,' " said Youtube user wickenlemons1.
Parents and doctors are concerned that the girls are opening themselves up to hurtful comments and other dangers.
"You never know who’s watching it," Tasha Almodovar, a parent, told MyFoxTampaBay.
Dr Stacey Scheckner, a Florida psychologist, agreed, adding: "I think what happens is just by putting that video up [a girl is] actually sabotaging herself. She's creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Because she may get attention but then she feels bad, why do I even need to do this? This is not normal. Why do I even need to do this? Then they're vulnerable to outside pressure.”
Scheckner told MyFoxTampaBay.com it is important for parents to discuss these issues with their children before allowing them to post public content online.
