Could a pill to boost memory soon be on the way for Alzheimer’s patients?
Neuroscientists have identified a molecule in mice that, when genetically suppressed, can significantly improve memory, the Daily Mail reported.
Baylor College researchers observed when the molecule, called PRK, was suppressed with an injection, another immune molecule called gamma interferon increased communication between neurons and improved memory and brain function.
A drug that could mimic the effect in humans could be used as a treatment for Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers said.
PKR is an immune molecule that signals the brain of viral infections. However, there was no sign of increased disease in the rodents when the molecule was inhibited.
