World’s AIDS Day, which is today, is a day to celebrate the living – but one fashion designer wants to make it about the Day of the Dead.
Mondo Guerra, of celebrated Project Runway fame, has designed limited edition T-shirts in honor of World AIDS Day with bold graphics of “el dia de los muertos.” The shirts will be sold for $50 through piperlime.com. Twenty dollars of every shirt sold will be donated to amfAR, a foundation for AIDS Research.
Guerra, a fan favorite on Project Runway, shared his story about being HIV positive on the show. Since then, he’s been a vocal advocate for AIDS research.
“My thought was if something as simple as a tee shirt could be fashionable and wearable, why couldn't it serve a greater cause than just waking up and getting dressed,” Guerra told Fox News Latino.
The shirts, which are for women, include one with a brightly colored skull and a bow tie. Another T-shirt has a photo of a leafless black tree with a red heart.
“I am always inspired by my childhood, my religion and my family. I have always been attracted to the imagery of the sugar skull,” he said.
The Day of the Dead theme was the central theme of Guerra’s final collection on the TV show.
He said the Mexican tradition of the “dia de los muertos” wasn’t about death at all – but about celebrating the memory of loved ones.
“The Day of the Dead is celebration of our loved ones who have passed,” Guerra said. “When I was thinking of World Aids day I wanted to create something very true to who I am, and what I know. Who I've known and miss and those people in my life that still fight this disease. It’s about love and continuation.”
