The tale of Elena Chiritescu, the 10-year-old gypsy who gave birth in Spain last month, has caused an international sensation and global outcry. But little was known about the young girl’s life until know.

The Daily Mail in London published a glimpse of her life of her life before the pregnancy. The full report can be read here. Below are a few of the highlights:

She was 9 years old, living in poverty with her grandmother and cousin in Romania when a relationship blossomed between her and her 13 year old cousin.

Elena’s mother and aunt left to work in Spain picking strawberries in hopes of making enough money for the family to escape their crushing poverty.

They left Elena and Gheorghe to be raised by their grandmother, the paper said.

Somehow the two, abandoned, fell in love, the paper said. Unbeknownst to the grandmother, the baby was conceived in the tiny bungalow where they lived, according to the Daily Mail.

“She let them live together as husband and wife,” a relative told the broadsheet. “Elena was Gheorghe’s first girlfriend and the same for her.”

Elena then went with her mother to Spain. Gheorghe stayed behind in Romania, the newspaper said.

The rest is well known. On October 26, Nicoleta Narcisa Chiritescu was born in a hospital in Southern Spain. She weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
