Customer leaves bible verse instead of tip for gay waitress

A waitress in Charlotte, N.C. says she's angry and hurt after a customer left a "hateful" message for her on a bill instead of a tip.

Alexandra Judd, a server at Zada Jane's Corner Cafe, says she was shocked to see "lev 20.13," short for Leviticus 20:13, written into the space where the gratuity should have been while serving brunch to a group of women on Tuesday.

The Bible may offer some valuable lessons, but it won't pay the rent.

Leviticus 20:13, which declares: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

The customer also added the words, “Praying for you," at the bottom of receipt.

This did not sit well with Judd, the 20-year-old waitress who got stiffed. Judd, who is a lesbian, crossed out the customer’s name and posted the receipt on her Facebook page.

"I don't care what anyone says, this is the most disrespectful thing you can do," she posted. "Don't pray for me darling, I have everything I could possibly want and need in my life." (The post is no longer visible to the public. Judd has either deleted the post or changed her privacy settings.)

"I never expected a hateful gesture like this," Judd told KAUZ. "I've had a guest leave me a pamphlet to their church as a tip one time, but I didn't feel as if they were being hateful towards me.”

Judd told the New York Daily News that she served two women at the table, and, "They just wouldn't talk to me, wouldn't answer my questions. They were really off, it was just rude."

They asked for separate checks, and one of the women left her a tip. The other left the Bible verse.

"I never thought people would discriminate against my sexuality that way," said Judd, adding that she never told the women she was gay.

“There’s a lot of hate in Charlotte right now.”

A recently passed law in the state prevents local and state government from mandating protections for LGBT people in the private sector or at stores and restaurants.
