This city just became the first to ban single-serve coffee pods

Germany’s second-largest city wants to cut down on the use of coffee pods.

The city of Hamburg has reportedly become the first in the world to ban single-use coffee pods from all government-run buildings, reports Digital Journal.

The little cups which hold a single serving of coffee, are made from a mixture of plastic and aluminum, which means they're recyclable and non-biodegradable.

It’s believed that the amount of them buried in landfills could circle the globe an estimated 12 times.

"These portion packs cause unnecessary resource consumption and waste generation, and often contain polluting aluminium," Jan Dube from the Hamburg Department of the Environment and Energy said over the weekend.

Keurig isn’t the only brand of single-use coffee pods coming under fire in Hamburg.

According to the 150-page Guide to Sustainable Procurement, government offices cannot purchase "polluting products or product components,” such as bottled water and plastic cutlery.
