McDonald’s may be adding kale to its menu later this year, according to an internal client memo from Janney Capital Markets.
“Possibilities include kale for use in salads, or perhaps a kale smoothie," Janneys analyst wrote in a note obtained by CNBC.
"More generally, McDonald's clearly aims to raise consumers' perception of the quality of its food. Adding kale to the menu in some way could help be a step in this direction."
The mention of kale was made at the fast-food giant's turnaround summit in Las Vegas last week, as the company deals with slumping sales and new management, CNBC reports.
McDonald’s spokeswoman Lisa McComb would not confirm or deny the possibility of adding the vegetable to the menu, telling Business Insider: "As we continue to listen to our customers, we’re always looking at new and different ingredients that they may enjoy."
Could this be yet another move by the major burger chain to attract millennials?
The launch of a kale-infused McDonald’s menu may come as a surprise to many given their recent Big Mac spot which proudly proclaimed “Will never be kale” over footage of a juicy burger. The spot also pokes fun at another trendy food: Greek yogurt.
McDonald’s also recently announced it's cutting items to simplify its menu, so the addition of the "superfood" seems at odds with its pare down policy.
Meanwhile, the demand for kale keeps growing. According to USA Today, the green leafy vegetable now appears on 400 percent more restaurant menus than it did five years ago.
Is the world really ready for the McKale?
The chain may have to look into shifting its marketing policy.
