A man who was arrested for stalking and breaking into actress Sandra Bullock’s house in 2014 has reportedly killed himself in his Los Angeles home after an hours-long standoff with police.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed to USA Today that Joshua Corbett, 42, was found dead in his home. A spokesperson for the L.A.P.D. did not confirm his identity, but said the suspect barricaded himself in his home and threatened police with violence when they arrived to serve a warrant linked to his probation.
According to BuzzFeed News, which spoke to Corbett’s attorney, Steve Sitkoff Corbett was suffering from mental health issues and simply couldn’t bring himself into his mandated court appointment. He was previously convicted of of first-degree burglary after stalking and breaking into Bullock’s house in 2014. The actress was able to hide in a locked bedroom closet until police arrived. When police arrived, the standoff began.
According to TMZ, which first reported the news, Bullock was previously upset last June when she learned that Corbett was out on the streets from a mental health facility much sooner than she expected. She went as far as to get a restraining order requiring him to stay 200 yards away from her until 2020.
It’s unclear at this time exactly how Corbett was able to take his own life, but police have said that the use of a gun, which he was prohibited from possessing as a condition of his probation, were not involved despite his threats to police at the time.
