Jessica Alba is proud to be Latina, yet she says she understands if her daughters won’t ever identify the same way.
The actress and philanthropist revealed in a recent interview that her daughters Honor, 7, and Haven, 4, are already picking up a couple words in Spanish – like besos (kisses) and leche (milk) but will probably find it a bit more difficult to identify with their mom’s culture.
"I grew up around my Mexican-American grandparents. My grandmother was an incredibly strong woman, a great influence on me," Alba told Parents Latina magazine. “I was also surrounded by tios and tias at a lot of family events. My kids don’t have (the) same of constant proximity.”
Alba is married to producer Cash Warren, son of actor Mike Warren, who is biracial.
She said she does make sure to teach her daughters about their culture and they do spend time around family members.
“But they're not surrounded by it all the time,” she said. “We have different cultures in the house."
Alba, 34, said despite this, her daughters will be “global citizens” and will need to understand many languages to “make a difference in the world.”
"My heritage is all about family, which always comes first. And respect for yourself and for your elders is something that I'm passing on to my daughters."
