MTV Australia was forced to apologize Sunday after sending an offensive tweet directed at actresses America Ferrera and Eva Longoria during Sunday night’s telecast of the Golden Globes.
The two actresses were on stage presenting the award for best actor in a TV series, drama, when MTV tweeted that they couldn’t understand what the actresses were saying.
“Where are the English subtitles?” MTV Australia tweeted.
The tweet has since been deleted, but not before getting a lot of social media backlash.
MTV Australia posted subsequent tweets to make amends.
"Our Tweet was in reference to @EvaLongoria & @AmericaFerrera's #GoldenGlobes joke. We sincerely apologise for causing offence," they wrote.
Shortly after, they added, "We get it was a bad call. We'll leave the humour to @rickygervais."
The two actresses were on stage presenting the best actor in a TV series, drama, award to Jon Hamm when they poked fun at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Twitter snafu from last month.
“Yes, I am Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes,” the recently engaged Longoria, 40, started off the sketch.
“And, hi, I am America Ferrera, not Gina Rodriguez,” added America Ferrera, 31, who was misidentified as the “Jane the Virgin” star on the official Golden Globes Twitter account.
“And neither of us are Rosario Dawson,” Longoria joked.
“No. Well said Salma,” Ferrera quipped back. “You’re welcome Charo,” Longoria said.
Rodriguez praised her fellow actresses for their joke, calling it perfect.
"I liked it and think it's funny!" the 31-year-old star told Us Weekly. "I thought their speech was funny, we have the same expression and I think other people care more than I do. But we do look alike, me and America!"
