Sofia Vergara praised the concept of Emilio Estefan’s new song “We’re All Mexican” celebrating Latino solidarity.
The “Modern Family” actress told the Associated Press in an interview Wednesday that it's important to raise awareness regarding the accomplishments of Latinos in America.
“I think it’s great. I think it’s beautiful to unite with people and to fight for a cause and represent a cause,” the Colombian actress said. “It’s a fun thing to do to come together and help other people.”
Estefan wrote the song in response to the anti-Mexican and anti-Latino rhetoric that he believes is becoming more prevalent.
The raucous anthem celebrating the love that many immigrants have of living in the United States was released Monday. The video features Latino celebrities including Gloria Estefan, Eva Longoria, Pitbull, Wisin and more.
“We have so many problems, and they are talking about Mexicans being rapists and killing people. That wasn’t right,” Estefan told Fox News Latino about the song. “We love this country. We don’t take things for granted.”
He called the song “love affair” between immigrants and the United States.
“It’s not about Donald Trump. It’s not about politics,” Estefan added.
“Hispanics have died for this country. We pay taxes. We work hard,” he continued. “The United States is my country. We don’t take it for granted.”
In her interview Wednesday, Vergara, 43, noted how things have improved for Latino actors since she first got in the business.
"Twenty years ago I started in Univision, and things have changed a lot. It's easier now to make a crossover. There are so many more opportunities; there are so many more scripts that have been written for Latin people. There's definitely doors opening every day," she said. "We hope that there's more material written for Latin people, but I think we shouldn't complain. Things are getting better."
She made the comments during an interview to promote the Ninja Coffee Bar, a coffeemaker for which she's a pitchwoman.
"I think I'm a natural because I grew up drinking coffee in Colombia. It's something that is part of my life, part of who we are. I always say to everyone that my only problem with Americans is the way they like their coffee," she laughed. "It's a little bit too bland for me."
As for her upcoming nuptials to fellow actor Joe Manganiello, she gave a ballpark date for the big day.
"I'm getting married at the end of the year during the winter. I'm very excited."
