Step aside Cookie Lyon, there is a new diva heading to ‘Empire’
Mariah Carey has added her name to the growing list of A-list stars showing their faces on the popular Fox television series.
“Empire” creator Lee Daniels announced the Grammy winner would appear on the show while introducing Carey at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on Wednesday.
“Watch her on ‘Empire’ you guys. She’s coming on ‘Empire,’” Daniels said to a loud cheer from fans.
The Oscar-nominated director didn’t elaborate on what role Carey would play, or how she might interact with the show’s diva, Cookie Lyon.
Carey, 45, received the 2,556th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and while she was definitely the star of the show, her 4-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan Cannon, were not impressed. They wanted their mommy’s attention and some time on the mic.
“Mommy, mommy,” Moroccan repeated as he tugged on Carey’s Yousef Aljasmi dress during her acceptance speech.
The “We Belong Together” singer bowed to her son’s wishes and picked him. “I love you, Mommy” he sweetly declared into the microphone.
Not wanting to be left behind, Monroe also asked for some mic time to also declare her love for Carey.
“I better get through with this before the kids want to come up and talk again!” Carey joked. “Thank you so much, really, everybody for being here … I just want to thank all the fans for coming. This is a huge honor. A childhood dream come true … Before these kids take me off the stage, I guess I should move along. Thank you so much.”
Carey is one of the most successful acts in music. She has 18 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, sold millions of albums and won a number of awards, including five Grammys.
She recently launched a residency in Las Vegas where she performs her No. 1 hits, including "Vision of Love," ''Hero" and "We Belong Together." She has also appeared in the films "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," which earned Daniels two Academy Award nominations.
