Parisians were up on arms Thursday when they found out that Gisele Bundchen and her little sister wore a full burka, the traditional Muslim clothing, to disguise themselves while on the streets of Paris.
They wore it during the holy month of Ramadan, apparently without realizing her choice of clothing would have a huge backlash.
“C’est ridicule!!!” wrote a commentator on the French-language gossip site Public, according to the New York Post. “To be photographed in a burka is ridiculous!!!! Especially since it is forbidden in France to wear it!!!!”
France banned the usage of burkas in 2010, barring women from fully covering their faces.
“She would do better to fess up to the plastic surgery because that’s not shameful. I never found her beautiful and I definitely don’t like her now,” an anonymous user posted.
Another user pointed out the hypocrisy of Bundchen wearing the burka to sneak into surgery despite having bowed to never go under the knife.
“In the street it is illegal to wear the burka! It therefore violated French law. A cap and a scarf would have been less conspicuous!” the person wrote.
Neither of the Bundchen sisters have commented.
Imam Muhammad Abdullah Kamal Al-Azhari of the Astoria Islamic Center in Queens told the Post that Bundchen’s actions were highly offensive to the more conservative Muslims.
“She’s not doing it for Islam. This is very bad,” he said. “She’s wearing a holy thing for a bad purpose.”
