Amy Adams’ ‘Today’ appearance suddenly canceled over Sony hack drama

NEW YORK – Amy Adams' sit-down with the "Today" show was scrapped on Monday morning minutes before she was to appear.

Insiders tell FOX411 the source of the snafu was the recent Sony hacking scandal, which included leaked emails that claimed Adams was paid less than her male counterparts for the Oscar-nominated flick “American Hustle.”

Adams requested questions about the Sony emails not be included in the interview, as she was appearing on the popular morning program to talk about her new film, "Big Eyes." But sources close to Adams and "Today" have provided FOX411 with conflicting reports about exactly what went down on the “Today” set that led to the last-minute cancellation.

A “Today” show insider insisted to FOX411 that Adams was informed ahead of time that Sony hack may come up.

“As a professional courtesy, Amy and her team were told well in advance that she might get asked about Sony, and that it was entirely up to her whether she wanted to answer,” the insider told us. Yet when she arrived, a debate about whether or not to include the Sony question occurred.

A rep for “Today” said: “As a news program, the ‘Today’ show doesn't allow guests to put restrictions on interviews. In this case, after hours of discussion we felt uncomfortable with the demands being made and we determined the best course of action for all parties involved was to cancel the interview.”

But a source with knowledge of the situation said that while Adams did not initially want to discuss the Sony hack, she agreed to do so and told producers she would respond to the questions as she saw fit. Yet moments later, the insider says, her interview was surprisingly canned.

The Weinstein Company, the company behind “Big Eyes,” told us they stand behind their starlet and that any implication that she was the cause of a conflict at “Today” does not fit their mild-mannered actress.

“We are certain her fellow actors and directors would all agree, she is nothing but the consummate professional both on and off set,” the statement read. “Amy decided to speak up for herself and express her disappointment that ‘Today’ would feel the need to ask her a question she did not feel comfortable [with], and rather than respect her opinion or continue the discussion, the reaction was to pull her appearance from the show.”

One of our sources also said Adams was professional when she spoke with producers about the issue.

Some publications have made mention of the fact that Bradley Cooper, who appeared alongside Adams in “American Hustle,” was interviewed by Natalie Morales about his upcoming movie “American Sniper,” but he was not asked about the hack. His sit-down with Morales aired on Monday but a source revealed to us that it was taped almost immediately after the Golden Globe nominations, which were on Dec. 11. News didn’t break about the emails revealing the “American Hustle” pay discrepancies until later that week.

Adams wouldn’t have been the first star that “Today” quizzed about the hack. Stars like Ben Stiller and Mark Wahlberg both appeared on the “Today” show last week and were asked about the Sony hack.

A rep for Adams declined FOX411’s request for comment.
