Tori Spelling slams Katie Holmes in memoir, says she can't sing, calls her 'plastic'

Tori Spelling isn't holding back when it comes to former friend Katie Holmes in her new memoir Spelling It Like It Is.

According to Radar Online, Spelling recalled liking Holmes when they first met. "Dawson's Creek Katie was exactly what you'd expect," Spelling wrote. "She was wearing jeans and a tank top. Her hair was down. She was shy but engaging, and altogether pretty adorable."

But a few years later, Spelling said Holmes gave her the cold shoulder when they ran into each other at vocal coach Eric Vetro's studio. "As I sat waiting outside his music room, I heard his prior appointment working with him in the other room. It was some actress singing horribly off-key," Spelling explained. "That made me feel better. I heard him say goodbye and then the actress walked out of the room. It was Katie Holmes.

"I didn't know whether we should hug or shake hands. But the signal from her was immediately clear: Don't even come close," Spelling continued. "I instantly got nervous. We clearly weren't going to catch up on the last 10 years. And we certainly weren't going to talk about her husband, Tom Cruise."

Spelling tried to break the ice by using "the mommy card," mentioning that she had children around Suri's age. When Holmes didn't seem to know about Spelling's children, the Beverly Hills, 90210 star got "annoyed."

"Come on. OK, I know you're busy. But you're in the public eye. Don't tell me you don't follow the tabloids. Don't tell me you don't know anything about other celebrities and their kids," Spelling wrote. "Then we stood there. She was just plastic. In a perfectly polite way. ... My pits were drenched. I never sweat. It was that awkward. I thought, I know you're not a robot because you can't sing for sh--."

But soon Spelling's annoyance was replaced by pity.

"As my anxiety faded, I just felt sorry for her," Spelling said. "I hadn't expected her to reminisce, but this was a totally different person from the girl I'd met at Trader Vic's. I felt sad for her. Those paparazzi photos, the ones where she looks like she's miserable but putting on a happy face? That's what she looked like in person."

Shortly afterward, Spelling noted, Holmes and Cruise divorced.

Spelling also opens up about her own family troubles in her new book, saying that she and husband Dean McDermott are so broke that they can't even afford for him to get a vasectomy.

According to an excerpt obtained by People, as reported by Entertainment Tonight, Spelling says her wealthy childhood caused her financial issues. "It's no mystery why I have money problems. I grew up rich beyond anyone's dreams," Spelling wrote. "Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle, I can't seem to let go of my expensive tastes. And then there's my little shopping problem. ... I can't afford to live like this anymore. Our circumstances have changed. They say admitting the problem is the first step."

Spelling says she is working hard to make changes to her lifestyle. "I haven't bought a purse in three years, and it's fine," she said. "I look back at that girl who shopped at Gucci in my 20s, and I can't even relate. I can't believe I thought it was important."
