The photographer who claims he was attacked by Kanye West at Los Angeles International Airport hired high-profile lawyer Gloria Allred to sue the superstar rapper.
Daniel Ramos, a Los Angeles-based video photographer, filed the lawsuit Wednesday claiming assault, battery, negligence and violation of civil rights. He is suing for unspecified damages.
He claimed his right hip was injured when West allegedly punched him in an unprovoked attack and wrestled his camera to the ground. Ramos was a member of the paparazzi who staked out the airport in July to snap celebrity photos.
“I told him twice, ‘I don’t want to fight you,’” said Ramos. “However, he attacked me anyway.”
West was captured on video July 19 wrestling the photographer to the ground at the airport.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Ramos and Allred said they were speaking out against the rapper because he has yet to apologize for his behavior and because other celebrities have spoken out in support of West’s actions. They cited Twitter comments made by Kristie Alley, Cher and Kylie Jenner.
"We are concerned that celebrity support for an attack on photographers will increase the risk of harm to them," Allred told the Los Angeles Times, adding that Ramos did no more than exercise his First Amendment rights.
The lawsuit comes after the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office declined to file felony assault and attempted robbery charges against the rapper, saying Ramos didn’t have a significant injury.
The Los Angeles city attorney’s office was considering whether to file misdemeanor charges.
