Julian Assange is teaming up with the Puerto Rican band Calle 13 on a new musical endeavor.
One of the group’s members, René Pérez Joglar, aka “Residente,” confirmed he is joining the WikiLeaks founder for a live songwriting session on Thursday.
The collaborative effort will take place over Twitter, with an invitation for the public to join in, and will address "media manipulation, freedom of expression & social media empowerment.”
On Wednesday the two met at the Ecuadorean embassy in London, where Assange has been confined for the last year after being granted asylum in the Latin American country.
A political activist himself, Residente said in a press release ahead of his London trip that he was meeting with Assange because they share “the same stance against censorship and the concealment of information.”
Since June 8, Residente has been active on Calle 13’s Twitter account, which has five million followers, in an effort to tease toward his live music-making session with Assange. He said he "would take the ideas of their united voices into a planned meeting with a special guest in the coming days.”
Calling it a “pie forza’o," a press release says the creative exercise “will focus on the subjects of disinformation and media manipulation, with Residente and Assange offering a first verse as a guide to build on, with public response.”
Residente says he supports Assange because he is “accused of releasing information to which we should have had access, because we deserve to be well informed”
“Assange just revealed information about what governments are doing. Those who do not support him are attacking their own human rights, fundamental rights.”
