Jenni Rivera, Life and Death of a Mexican American Superstar
Mexico's music world mourned Jenni Rivera, the U.S.-born singer presumed killed in a plane crash whose soulful voice and openness about her personal troubles had made her a Mexican-American superstar.
Celebrities took to Twitter to publicly mourn the tragic death of Jenni Rivera after the norteño singer and and four others died in a plane crash in Mexico Sunday night.
Mexican songstress and actress Lucero wrote on her Twitter account: "What terrible news! Rest in peace ... My deepest condolences for her family and friends."
Pop star Paulina Rubio, Rivera's colleague on the Mexican show "The Voice of México," said on her Twitter account: "My friend! Why? There is no consolation. God, please help me!"
Born in Long Beach, Calif., Rivera was at the peak of her career as perhaps the most successful female singer in Grupero, a male-dominated regional style influenced by the Norteño, Cumbia and Ranchero styles.
Like Lucero and Rubio, fellow Mexican American actress Eva Longoria was shocked after learning about Rivera’s death.
“My heart breaks for the loss of Jenni Rivera & everyone on the plane. My prayers go out to her family. We lost a legend today,” Longoria posted on Sunday.
She later re-tweeted two Jenni Rivera fans, who were clearly in shock and mourning the star.
“@EvaLongoria we lost a huge #MexicanIdol but the legend grows. My prayers are with her family. #MexicansProudAndSadOfJenni #Latinos,” wrote Juan Magana.
Mario Lopez, Longoria’s BFF and host of the singing competition “The X Factor,”was also upset after learning about Rivera’s death.
“Spent some time with Jenni Rivera recently. What an amazing lady… Cool, smart, funny & talented. Such a travesty… God Bless her family,” he wrote.
Rivera had recently filed for divorce from her third husband, was once detained at a México City airport with tens of thousands of dollars in cash, and publicly apologized after her brother assaulted a drunken fan who verbally attacked her in 2011.
Her openness about her personal troubles endeared her to millions in the U.S. and México.
"I am the same as the public, as my fans," she told The Associated Press in an interview last March.
Jennifer Lopez and close friend./colleague Pitbull could not believe the news.
“So sad!! Praying for Jenni Rivera’s children and family and the passengers families,” Lopez said via her Twitter account.
“I highly respected #JenniRivera 4 being a gr8 performer but more then tht being real & gr8 example 4 us all que dios la bendiga &may she RIP,” said Pitbull.
Even non-Latino celebrities were distressed after learning of Rivera’s plane accident.
“RIP #JenniRivera blessed I got to know u the past few years. Talented, humble, smart, cool as f**k. My kind of diva,” TV host Carson Daly wrote on his Twitter account. Music executive Randy Jackson, music mogul Russell Simmons and actress Kirstie Alley also paid their respects.
“Heard confirmed news about our dear @JenniRivera.. this breaks my heart in a million pieces.. it is just a huge loss for our community,” said actor Wilmer Valderrama.
“Your story, ur passion, ur pride 4 ur family & ur latino community inspired us all. U leave behind the legacy of an icon #RIPJenniRivera,” he added.
