Jessica Sanchez gave her fans and the judges a double dose Wednesday night on American Idol, as the remaining contestants were given the “now and then” challenge.
The Idol hopefuls had to perform twice, singing songs from recent and past years.
In her first round, Sanchez took the stage and fearlessly tackled Alicia Keys’ “Fallin,”which left the judges with huge smiles. They each said they were glad to have used their only “save” on her.
“With talent like yours you can’t get mad at that,” said a happy Steven Tyler. “That was passion you released.”
Superstar Jennifer Lopez told Sanchez she felt good about saving her. She also said she could still not believe Sanchez's age because she “is just a baby.”
“The way you play with it [the songs]... It’s crazy,” said Lopez. “I’m glad we had a save and that we used it on you.”
Music producer Randy Jackson agreed, screaming “Amen!” He said her singing “is other-worldly.”
“It was the right thing to do,” said Jackson. “I don’t know if you know how good you are or how good you can be.”
Then, added: “I hope America gets it right.”
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest asked Sanchez how it felt to have Lopez and the judges come and save her last week.
“Literally, I thought you guys didn’t want me to sing anymore ...because you wanted me to go home,” said a humbled Sanchez.
Interscope Record executive and American Idol coach, Jimmy Lovine, said Sanchez did not deserve to go home, but now she must prove she deserves to stay.
“Jessica doesn’t deserve to be in the bottom three,” said Lovine. “But now Jessica has to save herself.”
“She has to feel the music and have a big moment,” he added.
For round two of the competition, Sanchez brought her alter ego, BB Chez, to the stage, giving a feisty performance of “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding.
The judges approved but told Sanchez to work on connecting with the lyrics and the audience emotionally.
“Good God almighty you’ve done it again,” Tyler said.
“With this performance we got a little bit of your alter ego,” Lopez continued. “[But] we’ve got to start pushing it. Start connecting.”
Jackson said she did a great job but she had to "work on you connecting with the lyrics.”
