Actor Eddie Murphy is a leading contender to host the 84th Academy Awards, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The magazine's website reported Sunday that Murphy is said to be favored for the gig by Brett Ratner, a producer of the awards broadcast who just finished directing Murphy in the upcoming movie "Tower Heist."

Ratner and producer Don Mischer are planning to meet with Academy president Tom Sherak after the Labor Day holiday to discuss potential hosts, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
