It should have been a great performance.
Unlike many American pop stars, Christina Aguilera can actually sing. And her voice was as moving as ever when she belted out "The Star Spangled Banner" at Sunday's Super Bowl, except for one little problem: She got the words all wrong.
When it was time for Aguilera to sing the line, "O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming," she repeated the line, "What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming," swapping the word "watched" for "hailed."
Whoops!

As criticism started to pile up, the 30-year-old singer issued the following statement: "I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through," she said.
We're going to take the high road and say yes, Christina, your American pride and the true spirit of the anthem did come through.
But a few more practice sessions would have been nice.
