Dale Earnhardt, Jr. may be off to the best start in his NASCAR career, with a win in the Daytona 500 and two second place finishes in the first four races, but he’s already thinking about retirement.
No, he’s not planning on hanging up his fire suit anytime soon, but Friday on Twitter, the 39-year-old laid out his perfect plan for fading into the sunset one day.
It’s a path a lot of older, and less successful drivers have taken involuntarily to make ends meet, back through the ranks of NASCAR’s Nationwide and Camping World truck series to the low-budget late model stock cars raced at hundreds small tracks across the country. But in Junior’s case, the dream is more an indication of his love for the sport.
“Like Benjamin Button” one fan replied, referring to the fictional character who ages backwards finding happiness along the way.
Earnhardt only joined Twitter in February following his Daytona win, and already has over 600,000 followers, second among NASCAR drivers only to Danica Patrick at 1.04 million.
