There’s nothing worse than grabbing a bag of flour from the cupboard, tearing it open, and finding a mob of mealybugs where your baking goods should be! But thanks to these tips from Julie Edelman, the Accidental Housewife herself, you can rid your flour, pastas and cereals of unwanted mealybugs once and for all!

  • Clean out your cabinets. Don’t let those mealybugs get comfortable! Remove all baking supplies from your cupboards or pantry and give the shelves a thorough cleaning, preferably with a green cleaner like rubbing alcohol.
  • Keep it cold. Mealybugs tend to dislike cold spaces, so try storing any susceptible baking items in the fridge.
  • Fortify your foodstuffs. Repackage any pastas, cereals or snacks in resealable plastic baggies. Place your flour in an airtight container, as well.
  • Game, set and match(book). To finish off the job, leave a matchbook inside your airtight flour container during storage. Mealybugs can’t stand the sulfur!
