Yemeni security officials say a security officer has been shot dead by gunmen on a motorcycle in a restive province where high-level intelligence officers have been assassinated in the past and where al-Qaida is active.
They say Maj. Majid Muttayr died after he was shot by men with a firearm affixed with a silencer on Sunday in al-Qutn district in southeastern Hadramawt province.
The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to brief reporters.
The shooting comes a day after two Yemeni soldiers were killed and four others injured by a roadside bomb in the same province.
Washington considers al-Qaida's branch in Yemen one of the group's most active and dangerous.
The U.S. is believed to have carried out deadly drone strikes in Hadramawt in the past.
