Peace talks between Yemen's warring sides have started in Kuwait in an effort to end the fighting in the impoverished country.
Representatives of the Yemeni Shiite rebels and their allies arrived earlier in the day in Kuwait.
The UN envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed opened the peace talks Thursday. In remarks carried on Kuwait's state TV, he noted that more than 7,000 people have been killed in the conflict since late March 2015.
The talks were originally supposed to begin Monday but were delayed because of a Houthi boycott.
The talks are aimed at finding ways to resolve the conflict between Yemen's internationally recognized government, that's backed by a Saudi-led military coalition, and the Houthis and their allies.
Both sides have violated a fragile ceasefire currently in place.
