Wildfires raging across southeast Australia destroy homes, injure firefighter

Scores of wildfires raging across southeast Australia in dry and windy summer conditions have destroyed homes and injured a firefighter.

Victoria state Fire Service Commissioner Craig Lapsley says 37 blazes are burning out of control across the state on Sunday, threatening rural towns and the fringes of Australia's second largest city, Melbourne.

Victoria state Country Fire Authority spokeswoman Anushia Sivanesan says homes have been lost in Victoria, but authorities have yet to assess the numbers.

Lapsley says at least one firefighter has been injured. The firefighter was hit by a falling tree and received medical treatment.
