A European security organization is accusing Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of intimidating a journalist and threatening her safety after he lashed out at her during a campaign rally ahead of Sunday's presidential elections.
In a campaign speech attended by thousands of supporters Thursday, Erdogan called Amberin Zaman a "shameless woman" and a "militant in the guise of a journalist" for comments she made about voters in Muslim societies. Zaman is The Economist magazine's Turkey correspondent and also writes for Taraf newspaper.
Dunja Mijatovic, media freedom representative at the Organization for Security and Cooperation, said Friday she was "alarmed by the latest example of intimidation of and threats toward journalists in Turkey."
Zaman is the latest of a number of journalists to be publicly chastised by Erdogan.
