The U.S. secretary of energy says leaders at a summit in Ethiopia thanked the U.S. for its new proposal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.
Ernest Moniz attended the two-day summit to explore strategies to accelerate the development of clean energy sources and the adoption of energy efficient technologies.
Moniz said Ethiopia's prime minister congratulated and thanked the U.S. delegation for President Barack Obama's proposed rule for the Environmental Protection Agency to cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 30 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels. He said the chief economist for the International Energy Agency echoed those comments.
Moniz said he was surprised how strongly focused summit attendees were on the need to address climate change. Africa is viewed as being vulnerable to changing climate patterns.
