The World Food Program will begin distributing vouchers to droves of hungry Venezuelan migrants arriving in neighboring Colombia as part of a program similar to that offered to refugees from war-torn nations like Syria.
The United Nations food agency announced Thursday it will begin using its own emergency funds to provide the aid but is calling on the international community to raise $46 million needed to feed 350,000 people.
The help will come in the form of a $35 monthly voucher for use at local grocery stores.
The U.N.'s surveys indicate 90 percent of Venezuelan migrants do not know where they will get their next meal.
Officials estimate at least 1.5 million Venezuelans have fled in recent years.
