UK spy inquest hears landlady found him tied up

The landlady of a British codebreaker whose body was found locked in a sports bag says she once found him tied to the bed.

Jennifer Elliot's testimony was read out at an inquest into Gareth Williams' death at Westminster Coroner's Court on Wednesday.

Elliot says she heard Williams calling for help in the middle of the night from his apartment in an annex of her house three years ago.

She says she and her husband went in to his room and saw him tied by his wrists to the headboard looking embarrassed. She says they cut him free and they never found Williams in a similar situation again.

Williams worked for Britain's secret eavesdropping service GCHQ and was attached to the country's MI6 overseas spy agency when he was found dead in August 2010.
