Britain's police have closed an investigation into allegations of murder and sexual abuse of children by politically powerful people decades ago.
London's Metropolitan Police said Monday that Operation Midland — which began in 2014 and cost 1.7 million pounds ($2.5 million) — ended without any charges being laid.
The probe examined allegations that that a group of pedophiles linked to senior levels of British politics and law enforcement abused children in the 1970s and '80s. The probe also looked into the alleged murder of three boys.
It was one of several inquiries triggered by revelations that entertainer Jimmy Savile, who died in 2011, was a prolific pedophile.
Police defended the investigation. Scotland Yard Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Rodhouse says it was "absolutely right" that the allegations were not dismissed prematurely.
