British police say they have charged a 74-year-old man who allegedly held three women against their will in a London house for 30 years.
Police said Aravindan Balakrishnan was charged with false imprisonment, rape, indecent assault and cruelty to a person under 16 years old.
Balakrishnan, known as "Comrade Bala," led an obscure Maoist collective in the late 1970s. He was arrested in November along with a 67-year-old female suspect, in what police described at the time as the largest modern-day slavery case in Britain. The woman has not been charged.
Police said the suspects shared a political ideology with the three victims, who were held in a London house for decades. Police said the victims were beaten, brainwashed and cut off from the outside world.
