UK police arrest journalist over phone hacking

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

British police investigating phone hacking by a newspaper have arrested a third journalist from the tabloid News of the World.

The Metropolitan Police said a 55-year-old man was detained Thursday on suspicion of unlawfully intercepting mobile phone voicemail messages. He was being questioned at a London police station.

British media identified him as James Weatherup, a senior reporter.

The News of the World is being sued by celebrities who accuse the paper of intercepting their voice mail messages.

The paper long maintained that hacking was confined to two rogue employees who were jailed in 2007. But last week it acknowledged the practice was more widespread and offered to pay compensation.

Two other staffers were arrested and questioned earlier this month.
