Witnesses say police in Uganda forcibly entered the offices of an independent newspaper to search for evidence against an army general who questioned the president's alleged plan to have his son succeed him.
The Daily Monitor's political editor Henry Ochieng said about 50 plainclothes police entered the paper's premises Monday and prevented anyone from leaving. Police stood guard outside.
News editor Alex Atuhaire said the action was "obviously related" to Gen. David Sejusa, who recently wrote to the internal security service asking for an investigation into reports that those opposed to President Yoweri Museveni's son succeeding his father could be assassinated.
The newspaper published contents of that letter. Sejusa, who is traveling in Europe, is wanted by police.
Atuhaire said police were treating the newsroom like "a scene of crime."
